What Is a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

Support Rooted in Lived Experience

What Is a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

A Peer Recovery Support Specialist is someone who has personal experience with recovery from substance use and has completed specialized training and certification to support others on their recovery journey.

Peer Recovery Support Specialist use their lived experience to provide encouragement, hope, and practical support. They understand that recovery looks different for everyone and are here to walk alongside you.

How Can a Peer Recovery Support Specialist Help Me?

Peer Recovery Support Services are designed to help you build a strong foundation for long-term recovery. Your Recovery Peer can:

Encourage and support your recovery goals.

Help you identify your strengths and build confidence.

Share recovery tools and strategies that have been helpful in their own recovery.

Help you identify and overcome barriers to recovery.

Connect you with community resources and recovery support services.

Introduce you to mutual aid and recovery support meetings.

Encourage healthy coping skills and wellness activities.

Help you build a positive support network.

Celebrate your successes and support you through challenges.

What Peer Recovery Support Is Not

Recovery Peers are not counselors or therapists.

They do not:

Provide clinical counseling or therapy.

Diagnose substance use or mental health conditions.

Prescribe medications.

Provide legal or medical advice.

Make treatment decisions on your behalf.

Instead, they work alongside you to encourage, motivate, and support your recovery.

Recovery is a personal journey, and you don't have to do it alone. A  Peer Recovery Support Specialist is here to provide encouragement, share hope, and support you.
